This park is located in the city centre, so car parking nearby is quite restricted to availability. There is a small car park but bear in mind it’s opposite a major hospital, so it can become busy. The nearest bus stop is on Richardson Road as well as Barrack Road. It's a pleasant walk from the city centre, though slightly uphill.

What’s Available

With meandering tree-lined paths that change throughout the seasons, it’s an all-round great place to relax. There are lots of benches to sit, you can also read a book under the tree if you like or enjoy some lunch and watch the world go by, the choices are endless.

A large play area can be found in the woodland to the north of the park and is separated into two areas so children of all ages can enjoy playing.

About

Leazes Park is the first purpose-built park in Newcastle and was open to the public on the 23rd December 1873. This traditional Victorian park in the heart of Newcastle, sits in the shadow of the infamous stadium of St. James’ Park and opposite Leazes Park is the RVI Royal Victoria Infirmary. This park is a mature, well kept green space and a rare gem that’s full of history, perfect for a stroll. The ornate gateway to the park on Richardson Road was built in 1886 and to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, it was refurbished in 2002. The Bandstand was rebuilt to the original design in 2003 and refurbished in 2017. The balustraded promenade dominates the high ground in the west of the park. It was rebuilt to the original design in 2003 and restored in 2017. Within the flowerbeds on the terrace, you’ll find memorial stones. It has a lake which was originally intended for ice-skating and boating. The lake is stocked and fished by Leazes Park Angling Association.

Things To Do

If you’re feeling active, grown-ups can find 6 tennis courts open for play at all times. For families, you’ll find that there are lots of breeding wildfowl, ducks and swans. You can bring some birdseed. Basketball courts are perfect for groups of sporty kids to burn off some energy. They’re open for play at all times.

The Tower Café is within Richardson Road Lodge (with toilets). There’s often an ice cream van on fine days, so bring some cash. There are picnic and BBQ areas, so come prepared.
